I know which artist i like and whos work ill collect, but thats not the same as being an 'influence', im always curious to find out about which artists, others (you guys in this senario) think are an influence on me, i sometimes try to see influences on other artists work myself...so if i can ask you, in your opinion which elements of other artists work do you see in mine? If i get a response or not, ill post a follow up journal of artists i have consiously tried to emulate
  • Listening to: the sound of traffic
  • Reading: James Bond newspaper strips
  • Watching: Walking Dead, Game of Thrones
  • Playing: Assassins Creed
  • Eating: nothing atm
  • Drinking: Coffee still as always

I'm thinking John Romita Jr. has some influence in there...

I see similarities with Jean Paul Leon, Moebius, Romita Jr., Toth and a little Kaluta.

This is evidenced in your line work, use of shadow, ability to create weight in your characters.

Thanks Gary JP Leon is definitely someone ive consciously tried to emulate. When Romita jr drew Daredevil in the 90s he blew me away i loved his style and again i definitely tried to emulate, Moebius? well its Moebius, ive certainly been seduced by his work but the quality was beyond me...if even a little of what he does has rubbed off then thats great, same with Toth hes another universal touchstone, i think. As for Mike Kaluta, i got his Starstruck series and loved it, i dont think tho' he was so much a conscious influence but interesting to think about

Yeah, his style (like the guys he had a studio with way back when are all very attractive).

i wasnt that impressed with Kaluta's stuff at the time of the Studio, but the Starstruck work is top notch

I wasnt sure if you were being serious or not, now i know you are, thats put a big satisfied grin on my face =D, the spotting of blacks is something was very weak at scared of it really, so its great you think its a strong point now...

I agree about you getting really good at the black-spotting, but the artist that came to my mind when I thought of that was Frank Miller, especially during his Sin City stuff. Toth is probably a little closer to your style, though.

I do like Miller's inking style but never actively tried to emulate it because it is very spontaneous, quite aggressive i never thought id be able to do it myself...but unconsciously? maybe

Yeah, I think his inking unconsciously influenced mine too--which probably explains why my inking often looks like a hot mess.
