The project i mentioned in my previous journal didnt get the final go ahead :( The writer is hopeful to get it published by a another publisher so it may see the light of day, i have to admit to a pinch of disappointment, but to me it cant overshadow the initial offer of work from a professional publisher, which is what im taking from all this :)

I get regularly slagged off at the Glasgow drink and draw and sometimes its because i dont actually have a comic published in print form, well that may change now...ive been given a preliminary go ahead to draw a four part comic book series, at the moment i cant mention the title or the company, its not one of the big names (yet), but i was impressed with their roster of artists and writers and if it goes ahead it will be published and sold both sides of the Atlantic :D

Some of the gang at the Glasgow drink and draw persuaded me to get a stall at the MCM Glasgow Convention, so ill be in the comic village, ill be selling sketches and prints and chatting of course, so if anyone drops by say hello, im terrified ill just be ignored

It was almost completely painless (except to my wallet) and took less than 15 minutes, my eye felt a little gritty at times for 2 days, but its now ok. My vision is definitely clearer and im sure my reading has improved. I guess I was thinking it would be like a light switch and my vision would be fantastic, the surgeon did actually say "Pop! and my vision would be great the next day", well it wasn't but I can't burn things or see through them either, I Just see a bit better and thats enough, was it worth 2k? well everyone will have to make their own minds up, but I got my money's worth, I guess Ill have to wait and see if it slows or stops my eyes getting sore, if it does then its definitely worth it, theres still the chance of infection so theres still a little concern

for longer than ive been on Deviant Art the vision in my right eye has become more blurred and less focused, my left eye compensated and using glasses, means it hasnt really affected me or my work (much), but its always been on my mind, my eyes do seem to get strained, i work on a PC during the day and stare into a cintiq at night, so its not surprising.
Ive been thinking of surgery for a long time, everyone ive asked thats had it done has always recommended it, so after a consultation, ive signed up for surgery (in about a month), im only getting my right eye done so any risk is at least halfed?
So im hoping it all goes well and that itll help my work too, fingers crossed :)

Scotch corner a Scottish artists blog here scotchcorner.blogspot.co.uk/ interviewed me here scotchcorner.blogspot.co.uk/20… , its a site i check out regularly so i was honored to be asked and given the opportunity to show some of my work (most of it will be familiar to anyone viewing my DA site here), but hopefully it will give me a bit more exposure, which can never be a bad thing...so long as its just my artwork!

I know which artist i like and whos work ill collect, but thats not the same as being an 'influence', im always curious to find out about which artists, others (you guys in this senario) think are an influence on me, i sometimes try to see influences on other artists work myself...so if i can ask you, in your opinion which elements of other artists work do you see in mine? If i get a response or not, ill post a follow up journal of artists i have consiously tried to emulate

Im looking for character ideas for drawing, so i thought id ask you guys for requests or sort of comissions, if you have characters you'd like to see me draw, they can be your own creations of just your favourite super hero or sci fi character or someone based on aminmation or film or even from a description, im mostly interested in drawing people and animals (maybe even alien ones) and maybe on occasion the odd object like a space ship or a car or something, tho i cant promise ill do everything asked or even that the result will be great, but if it inspires me ill tackle it, These pieces wont be on paper or posted out or any thing, maybe in the future i will try proper paid comissions posted out on real paper but for now, these wont be actual paper pieces they will be electronic only
So send me your ideas, please

As you may know i had a great time visiting New York and popped in to NYCC too, but that was a bit too hectic for me, well im planning to go to the East coast again this year, my preference would have been Boston and the Boston Comic Con, but its way too early in the year for me, im going to stop over in Reykjavik (Iceland) and vist my brother and his family, hes a Golf pro over there and suggests i visit in the Fall/Autumn, so flying via Reykjavik at that time of the year i can go to Boston airport theres a Rode Island Con nearby i could visit from Boston and Washington airport there a con over at Baltimore, of course i could leave out the comic cons and just visit New York again, i am tempted....if anyone has any advice on thiose cities and conventions or some alternatives let me know

I need help to find reference for Backgrounds and scene settings, i tried to search for stills of film scenes, for master studies (hoping i could get my eye in through that) but its actually quite hard to find stills that dont feature the stars rather than the scenes, if theres a site for that, that would be great. Of course there is google/bing image search but, does anyone have any websites that have landscapes, cityscapes, rooms or cool settings, hopefully with some dramatic lighting or image shapes, i just want to get in to the habit of drawing (maybe painting?) this type of subject, eventually hoping to create my own... any help will be appreciated...

Firstly I loved my first trip to New York (tho' the  7 hour flight wasn't too pleasant!) despite the reputation everyone I met was friendly and helpful.  As for NYCC it was a great experience, I met a few Deviants, Tony 'Hammermachine' Bourne, Elliot Fernandez, Robbie Rodriguez and Eric Canete, I thought I'd have plenty of time to go back to Artists Alley to chat to a few more, but you wouldn't believe how busy it got! the whole centre got very busy, I think they sold too many tickets for the size of venue
I brought my Portfolio, but I didn't get much of a positive response, to be fair I wasn't confident with the standard of work, but it was representative of what I am doing at the moment, it was a great (if painful) learning experience I've mentioned in a previous Journal that I realised that my comic strip work lacks a professional look, I've accepted I have a problem with composition/placement/backgrounds. I now accept that I haven't been judging my comic strip work properly. My one-off pin-up work is of a higher standard and if I'm honest I think this work  is of professional quality or close to it, but my comic strip work is nowhere as good,  for some reason, although I new somewhere that it was'nt as good, I was expecting reviewers to see what I was capable of - I was disappointed when no-one could see it - Quite embarrassing really, expecting someone to see something when I wasn't good enough to be able to show them! so with my head cleared, I now have to use this realisation to improve the standard of my Comic strip work. Im currently working on a horror strip set in the old west, so it all starts there

Backgrounds, mise en scene, perspectives

I hate doing them and yet its the main feature that drags my work down from looking professional. doing the Daily sketch challenges over at the outcasts forum has definitely helped with my figure work but the 30 mins time limit is combining with my own fear /reluctance/laziness to help me avoid working on my backgrounds, but now I have to find a way to incorporate this aspect into my work I cant simply shoehorn in a back ground after the fact, I have to plan it from the beginning of the work, the problem is the problem I always have... inspiration, I think uness I admit the issue openly, ill always try to gloss over it, so I'm going to consciously try to work on my backgrounds and placements and you can call me out if you think I fail in that and of course I'm always open to any tips or suggestions to help from you lot = )
